WHY YOU SHOULD BE SWEET ON FRUIT

This week at TCPJ we decided to become MythBusters. After noticing the same questions time and time again, we figured it was about time we investigate your queries and debunk all of these health myths. One question we seem battle over and over again is why we have fruit in our juices when some say it’s bad for you. And today, we’re here to uncover the truth about fruit sugar.

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: eat more fruit and vegetables. But we have a sneaking suspicion you may have also heard that sugar is bad for you, even fruit sugar. And with all of this conflicting information, you’re probably caught somewhere in the middle, confused as to what you should and shouldn’t eat. And though fruit and starchy vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes are high in fructose, they are real, whole foods that are truly wonderful for the body. It is actually the foundation of what your body needs!

Many studies have shown that excessive consumption of added sugar is harmful, including table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, both of which are actually half fructose. Because of this, many people have been misled into believing that the fructose that occurs naturally in fresh, beautiful, healing produce must also be bad for you. Though we can certainly see how you might draw this conclusion, this is indeed a huge misconception. It is near impossible to over consume fructose from simply eating fruit and starchy veggies.

When you drink our juices like The Glow or The Bedrock or nibble on fresh whole fruit like an apple, you are also consuming lots of water and soluble fibre (plus insoluble fibre in the case of whole fruit). This means that during digestion, it will actually take the fructose longer to hit the liver, making it better for you. Whole fruit and juices also tend to be quite filling! After we drink The Iron Man (contains carrot, beets, turmeric and lemon), we’re usually satiated for quite some time, which will lead to an overall lower consumption of sugars, whether fructose or otherwise.

Humans need calories and energy to function. But it’s up to you what you choose to fuel your body with. Despite the fearmongering surrounding fruit juices because of the presence of fructose in them, raw, fresh cold-pressed juices are a terrific way to get your energy. Because in addition to the energy-giving fructose they have, they also deliver vitamins, nutrients, phytochemicals and minerals easily and in high doses. It’s easily digested and a truly powerful delivery system for all the good stuff. Not only is the fruit sugar present in our juices instant and perfect energy for the human body but it also does not feed or breed pathogenic cells.

And, if you’re still worried about drinking just juice, be sure to be reasonable in your consumption of the extra fruity juices, focusing on our greener options or supplementing with smoothies like The Mango Green Protein to get both types of fibre in abundance and ensure you’re kept fuller even longer.

So what it boils down to is this: fruit sugar is A-OK! It is more than that! Its what you need to enjoy every single day to live a long and healthy life. Nobody ever got sick from eating or drinking raw organic fruit / juices. Ever! Enjoy our irresistible juices thoroughly and in moderation and reap all the benefits that fruit has to offer.
