Our associations with colour are often subconscious, based on a lifetime of experiences and memories. Our first memory of colour is in the womb. Pink is a colour we come to associate with nurture, love and comfort.

Our ancestors associated midnight blue with the end of the day, it symbolised tranquility and a time to rest. In contrast yellow indicated sunshine, and a time to hunt, thus energy and action.

Dr Max Lüscher spent his life researching colours and the emotional response they evoke in people. He created a psychological test, the Lüscher color test renowned since the 1950s.

By having people randomly select colours they preferred, he believed it revealed a person's true nature outside the realm of consciouness. The test illustrates an individual's stress points and desired objectives in life.
